Yeongdeok Snow Crab Festival
I would like to introduce one of the most interesting events coming up next week. It’s Yeongdeok Snow Crab Festival!
Snow Crab
Korea is famous for snow crab (also known as queen crab). The word in Korean is “Daegae” which literally means a huge crab. This Korean indigenous crab populates in the cold waters in the northern part of the East Sea.
In Korea there is a culinary tradition to eat snow crab on the New Year day. It is said that if you eat the meat of the crab at the beginning of the year, you will be healthy for the rest of that year.
Yeongdeok Crab Village
The village is located by the East Sea. Yeongdeok County locates in North Gyeongsang Province (Gyeongsangbuk-do). There you can see many huge billboards adversiting pictures of snow crab. Yes, this town is known to be the capital of snow crab in Korea.
This village has long been a famous fishery location. Since Goryeo Dynasty (King Taejo), this village is well known for snow crabs.
Along the streets nearby the Gangguan Port, it is really normal to see more than 100 shops selling snow crabs.
There not only you can enjoy fresh seafood, especially the famous crabs, but you can also enjoy the scenery of the East Sea. There are also beaches, fishing sites and water resort places.
The Festival!
This festival is an annual event and it will be held on March 31st – April 3rd this year.
The festival is about celebrating snow crabs served to the kings. The highlight of the festival is the Snow Crab Public Auction.
Another highlight is the snow crab market. Visitors can also go ride the boat and participate in cooking contests.

Opening ceremony, snow crab fishing, snow crab cooking competition, snow crab auction, reenactment of the ceremonial walk of King Taejo and much more!

– From Dong Seoul Bus Terminal, take an intercity bus to Yeongdeok (영덕)
– From Yeongdeok Bus Terminal, take a Yeongdeok-Jangsa (영덕-장사) or Yeongdeok-Bugyeong Spa (영덕-부경온천) route bus to Ganggu Intercity Bus Terminal (강구시외버스터미널).
– Transfer to a Yeongdeok-Chuksan (영덕-축산) or Yeongdeok-Yeongdeok (영덕-영덕) route bus, and get off at the Myeongsin Pharmacy (명신약국) bus stop.
– Go 700m forward to arrive at the festival venue.
