Why do Koreans love Fried Chicken?

Korean fried chicken or seasoned chicken is a fried chicken dish prepared in a Korean style. It is consumed as a meal, fast food at bars, or as an after meal snack in Korea. It is a very popular past time called “Chimec”, which combines the word for CHIcken and MEKju (beer), and stands for chicken and beer.

Looking to find all the restaurants in one go? Check out our google map!

Googlemap Summary of all the Restaurants!

On the google map, you can find the restaurants in the same order as this guide, followed with information on opening hours, phone number, and prices! It is the best one stop guide!

명동영양센터

Myeongdong Yeongyang Center

Located near Myeongdong Savoy Hotel, it is one of the first restaurants to roast chicken with an electronic rotisserie.  Established in the 1960s, it has operated for 55 years at its Myeongdong branch. Signature dishes include Roasted Whole Chicken, Baby Chicken, Samgyetang and during lunch a whole chicken set menu.

Back in the day, Myeongdong Yeongyang Center

People used to gather in front of the restaurant “just to see” the delicious chicken slowly being roasted in the electronic rotisserie! In late 1970s chicken became more affordable to Koreans, to a point a saying of “1 person, 1 chicken” was created because they enjoyed eating it so much!

Educational Information

Koreans are so focused on the taste of the batter or the sauce, we do not really know the taste of the meat itself. This restaurant is famous for their flavoursome chicken meat, and there is a reason behind this. They use “baeksaemi” chicken which suits our palette. Fried chicken houses focus on batter and sauce because the type of chicken they use is different, and lacks flavor.

Weaknesses:

Although tradition is important, it is also important to keep up with the trends and introduce new dishes that match modern tastebuds!

It is not the chicken taste that the young generation has come to expect!

Reason you have to visit:

A restaurant we hope will continue forever as it preserves the true taste of the chicken

A proud cultural heritage that combines history and tradition!

An expert practitioner of an important way of preparing chicken using the electronic rotisserie

Address 25-32 Myeong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul

Telephone Number 02-776-2015

Fried Chicken 13,500won / 14,500won
Fried Chicken set (lunch) 9,000won

Opening Hours 10:30~22:30 (closed Korea new year’s day, Korea Thanksgiving day)

용천통닭

Yongcheon Whole Chicken

Established in 1975 and operating for 45 years, it holds the position as oldest and most famous chicken restaurant in Uijeongbu’s famous chicken alley. As a first generation chicken house, each generous serving includes everything from the chicken neck to speciality cuts!  They will cut and portion the chicken at that spot and deep fry it in an iron pot!

Chicken Neck Alley?

When dressing chicken, there are a lot of wasted parts, predominantly the chicken neck. In order to help the weary farmers who toiled tirelessly, the store began to deep fry and sell these “unnecessary” parts at very low prices. As other stores began to copy their methods, this alley gained renowned as a chicken neck alley.

Educational Information

There is a limitation when using the iron pot. The depth at the center means fried food will gather and stick to each other in the middle. This makes it difficult to make crispy chicken as only watery dough can be used, giving the batter a weak taste.

Weaknesses:

The smell of trash in the alleyways reduces your appetite a little bit.

Younger generation used to crispy chicken may find this texture too unfamiliar!

Reason you have to visit:

Evokes childhood nostalgia and memories with the taste

Has continued using traditional methods of preparing and frying the chicken

THE restaurant for those who enjoy speciality cuts of chicken

Address 150-11 Uijeongbu 1(il)-dong, Euijeongbu, Gyeonggi-do

Telephone Number 031-846-4717

Fried Chicken 13,000won

Opening Hours 10:30~24:00

반포치킨

Banpo Chicken

Located in an apartment plaza in Seocho-gu, Banpo-dong. Established in 1977, from 1980 it became a fusion between a coffee shop and a HOF. Although the signature dish is the garlic chicken, they are also famous for their Hamburg Steak and Beef Cutlet. A favorite of numerous writers.

Educational Information:

A restaurant with a long history does not belong to its owner, but to the customers that have frequented it and have left impressions of their own memories in the long history. Every customer with a nostalgic memory of the restaurant can, in some sense be considered part owner.

Garlic Chicken’s Protagonist: garlic!

Roasting garlic reduces the sharpness and increases its sweetness and depth. However to recreate this flavor in the chicken, you need to use 4 times the amount of garlic.

Weaknesses:

Without the storytelling, the taste itself is not very memorable.

A restaurant with absolutely no privacy.

Because each item is made to order, there can be long waiting times.

Reason you have to visit:

You will have no regrets and will truly enjoy the taste.

A restaurant that evokes the past.

A restaurant that confirms that even chicken is a culinary art.

Address Banpo-building J 21,1050 Banpo-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul

Telephone Number 02-599-2825

Rotisserie garlic Chicken 16,000won
Hamburger Steak 15,000won

Opening Hours 09:30~24:30

Hanchu한추

Located at the end of Garosugil, established it 1989 it has been operating for 26 years. Signature dishes include chicken fried with chilli in the batter, and fried chillies stuffed with meat! A leading representation of Korean style chicken!

Weaknesses:

Service is lackluster and you cannot pack away to take home.

Very little sound absorption, making it very noisy.

Reason you have to visit:

A restaurant that breaks away from traditional with unique positioning

Can stand against franchise chicken in terms of taste and atmosphere
