The Museum SAN

It is a museum located peacefully in a beautiful natural city, Wonju. Museum SAN is named after the first letters of Space, Art, and Nature. It was opened in 2013 after starting construction with Ando Tadao’s design and finishing works by James Turrell, an artist of light and space. Some choose meditation on their own at the art museum, because of the mysterious design that captures the lines and texture of nature, and the changing colors of the four seasons.

Ando Tadao

People who enjoy their own meditation are often spotted in empty spaces in every corner of the building where they have their own uses. Reflecting such needs of visitors, the museum asked Ando Tadao to design it again last year, putting a small, dome-shaped meditation center inside the museum’s “mountain.” This combination goes well with Museum SAN, which is full of static enemies like a monastery.

Triangular sky

After you step into the meditation hall, you can put everything down, stick to the floor and you meet a small window somewhere in the ceiling that you can see up. Close your eyes quietly and feel the time as if it had stopped. When you leave your mind to the sound of the wind, the sound of birds, open your mouth and tell your stories. Meditation is another way to visit yourself in the nature.

After the meditation, the Museum SAN will face us with another air. In many parts of the building, harmony with nature is found, and people can see even a tiny thing with empty mindness. Works on the walls harmonize with the museum’s body, drawing a richer appreciation. The main building, which is connected with square, triangular, and circular spaces, offers a glimpse of the architect’s philosophy of connecting the earth to the sky and people. When you need a break from busy lives, visit this place full of nature in all seasons. You will be able to regain the “power” of living your daily life in the great nature and art.
