‘Samgyetang‘, or Ginseng chicken soup, is one of Korean famous traditional cuisines. The name ‘Samgyetang’ came from Korean words ‘삼계탕’, with 삼(Sam) stands for ginseng, 계(gye) for chicken and 탕(tang) for soup. It’s made of a whole young chicken stuffed with rice, Korean ginseng, and other ingredients such as jujube, chestnuts, garlic, all boiled together out of chicken soup.
Hot and boiling as it is, Samgyetang is more a seasonal food in summer for most Koreans. It is widely believed that having Samgyetang in the hottest time of a year is good for your health in Korean medicine, cause this warmness from inside helps drive away the heat from the outside.

Tosokchon Samgyetang (토속촌삼계탕)
Tosokchon Samgyetang was first founded in 1983, located in the central part of Seoul, near to the Gyeongbokgung Palace. It’s one of the most famous Samgytangs in Seoul, and became more popular since the former president of Korea Roh Moo-hyun visited the restaurant several times himself.
Tosokchon Samgyetang has a special recipe with sesame, pumpkin seed, ginko, sunflower seeds and other special ingredients added to the soup, which is not commonly seen in other Samgyetangs.

Korea Samgyetang (고려삼계탕)
Korea Samgyetang is another old restaurant with a even longer history dated back to 1960!! It is also located in central Seoul. Korea Samgyetang has been chosen as ‘Hi Seoul, Korean restaurant we are proud of’, and one of the ‘100 Korean restaurants loved by local Koreans’.

Lake Samgyetang is a restaurant a little bit hard to find compared to the above ones, but truly worth it! Lake Samgyetang is specialized in only Samgyetang menu, people just don’t care how far they have to travel as long as there’s chance to taste of this famous Samgyetang.
