Normally, people have to wear the mask of emotion or feeling to express their real mood, behavior, or temper inner or even to veil the unreal ones. Morality, ethics, and consciousness of people will play the part as the human mask to restrain and control the behavior, manner, and characters to be different from the animals.


In the area of Andong, there are many famous historical and cultural attractions, especially Hahoe Folk Village which was enlisted as UNESCO World Heritage. However, but in term of major cultural attraction in this region, the Andong Mask Dance Festival, is one of the world renowned cultural event in Korea, which is called “Byeolsingut Talnori Dance” as it has been designated an Important Intangible Cultural Asset of Korea.


Visitors to the festival can enjoy the many performances of Korea’s traditional mask dances. Moreover, many international mask dance troupes are also invited to the event, so visitors can enjoy and participate in various folk cultures from around the world. The programs of the festival are also included mask dance competitions and mask dance lessons, which are available for foreign visitors.


The organizer of this festival is clever in bringing local Korean art and culture to the world when this festival is now becoming one of famous world int’l cultural event. Therefore, this festival which is now named “Andong’s International Mask Dance Festival” with more than 50 events, including national and int’l mask dance performance, world mask competition, a world mask exhibitions, and many other events.

Actually, the strategy of turning this Andong Mask Festival to international event is not only to bring the world to Korea but also to unmask Korean art and culture to the world.



[Bus] From Dong Seoul Bus Terminal, take an intercity bus bound for Andong Bus Terminal. (Intervals: 30 min)
From the terminal, take a taxi to Mask Dance Park (탈춤공원, 15 min).
Hahoe Folk Village
Take Bus 46 at the bus stop across from Andong Intercity Bus Terminal.
Get off at Hahoe Folk Village. (40 min)
* Bus 46: 06:20-18:20 / Departs 10 times per day.

[Train] – Cheongnyangni Station (Seoul Subway Line 1) → Andong Station
06:10, 08:10, 10:25, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00, 19:00, 21:00 (Departs 7 times per day)
– Andong Station → Cheongnyangni Station (Seoul Subway Line 1)
02:18, 07:05, 08:30, 11:15, 13:20, 15:15, 17:15, 19:15 (Departs 8 times per day)
From Andong Station, take a tour bus to the venue.
