2016 Lotus Lantern Festival!

Have you guys ever know that in every year of May Korea will held a huge Lotus Lantern Festival. So we gonna share more information about this event to you guys and hope that you can  enjoy the Lotus lantern Festival if you are travelling in Seoul during MAY !!

The Lotus Lantern Festival is an annual event that takes place in “May” and colors Seoul with brightly decorated lotus lanterns.  Even so, the two are similar in that they are enjoyed by thousands of people every year, where people of various backgrounds, nationalities, and religions gather together to celebrate a rich and beautiful tradition.

This theme for the festival is ‘Youths with Lotus Lantern Festival’ and will be held for three days from May 6 to May 8 at the areas around Seoul’s Jogyesa Temple. In particular, a variety of creative displays are offered for the young to appreciate and enjoy.


1. Lotus Lantern Parade

The highlight of the lotus lantern festival is the lantern parade! Starting at Heunginjimun Gate all the way to Jogyesa Temple. The float leading the procession carries Sacheonwangsang statue, a god that watches over the heavens. Following close behind is a lion and elephant float, symbolizing wisdom. In the middle of the floats are performers doing elegant and colorful dances, making the entire scene even more spectacular.

Venue: Main area of Jongno Street (Heunginjimun Gate → Jogyesa Temple)
Directions: Dongdaemun Station (Seoul Subway Line 4), Exit 9 and walk for about 1-2 minutes. Or, Dongdaemun Station (Seoul Subway Line 1), Exit 6 and walk for about 2 minute.
Date: May 7, 2016 / 19:00-21:30

2. Exhibition of Traditional Lanterns

In remembrance of “Buddha’s Birthday,’ exhibition of traditional lanterns can be found various parts of Seoul including Cheongyecheon Stream, for a 10-day period. There was also a vast array of artworks about Buddhism, lotus flowers, and Dabotap Pagoda, all under a common theme: “Hoehyang, enlightenment in our daily lives.”

Venue: Areas of Bongeunsa Temple, Jogyesa Temple and Cheongyecheon Stream
Directions: Cheonggyecheon Stream & Cheonggye Plaza
Gwanghwamun Station (Seoul Subway Line 5), Exit 5 and walk for about 3-min.
Date:May 8, 2016 / 12:00-19:00


4. Have fun with Lotus Lantern

From the streets of Insa-dong to Jogyesa Temple, performers can be seen at a large scale lotus lantern parade. After the parade, visitors may join the performers of the street parade in a joyous dance and singing session in front of Jogyesa Temple.

Venue: Streets (Gongpyeongsageori) leading to Jogyesa Temple, Insa-dong
Directions: Conggak Station (Subway Line 1), Exit 2 and walk for about 6-min. Or, Anguk Station (Subway Line 3), Exit 6 and walk for about 6-min.
